SIKESTON - The Sikeston 8th and 9th grade football teams were swept by Cape Central on Thursday at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.
The 8th graders finished up their season 1-4 with a 28-6 loss to the Tigers.
The 9th grade team fell to 1-4 with a 19-6 loss.
Sikeston's 9th graders won't play again until Oct. 30 when they host Poplar Bluff at 6 p.m.
The 8th grade team only won one game, but head coach Chris Crosby said the team showed improvement with each game.
"They're a good group of kids," said Crosby. "They work hard. We came a long ways this year.
"The kids learned a lot this year. The kids worked hard, they did what we asked of them. It didn't show in our record, but they improved greatly throughout the year."
Sikeston scored its only touchdown with 40 seconds left in the game when Tommie Strong punched it in from six yards out to reach the final margin of 28-6.
Strong was all over the field on defense too, with numerous tackles, a blocked extra point and a recovered fumble.
In the 9th grade game, Sikeston jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Deamicus Cox's 41-yard scamper to the end zone in the first quarter.
The Tigers were able to rattle off 19 unanswered points to pull out the win.
Cox finished with 91 yards rushing on 11 carries.
"The kids played hard," said Crosby. "They never quit and they kept battling."
