SIKESTON - Sikeston High School news: Dorothy Matthews was elected by the student body as the high school's queen candidate for the Cotton Carnival to be held Saturday.

NEW MADRID - Susie Richardson, 15, a sophomore in Portageville High School, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Richardson, won the New Madrid Fall Festival Contest.

SIKESTON -Japanese visitors intensely watched the intricate workings of the conveyor belt carry Potlatch milk cartons from one side of the plant to the other. The visitors, 11 students of the International Business Institute, were in town to gain insights into American know-how.

BENTON - The Scott County Courthouse and Judicial Annex in Benton are getting a facelift to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act. Scott County Clerk Rita Milam stated that a pre-bid inspection will be open to all contractors at 10 a.m. Tuesday and bids will be open at 10 a.m. Oct. 26. Construction is to begin immediately after selection of a contractor.
