SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Monday night as they fell to the visiting Donettes of Doniphan 40-25.
"We played very competitively against a fundamentally sound team tonight," said Sikeston head coach Homer Jackson. "We did make some forced errors but it's early in the season so we have time to work on those in practice.
"However, I am still proud of our girls because they didn't give up and played hard to the very end."
The Donettes jumped out early in the first quarter as they connected on four shots from behind the arc, three of them from Chelsea Swindle, as the Lady Bulldogs' zone defense was quickly manipulated.
The Lady Bulldogs man-to-man defense held the Donettes to seven points in the second quarter although they still went into the locker rooms down 23-10 at the half.
In the second half, Sikeston picked up the tempo a little bit as they pressed Doniphan creating several turnovers. However, the Lady Bulldogs inefficiency to capitalize on the turnover opportunities hindered their chances of climbing back into the game as lack luster ball movement on the offensive end usually resulted in a turnover of their own.
"We tried to force the ball inside to Monica (Gray-El) and kind of became one dimensional," said Jackson. "We have to learn to recognize and make adjustments to what the defense is giving us."
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Keyarra Blissett who had nine points. Gray-El also had eight points while Amber Minner tacked on six respectively. The Donnettes (2-0) were lead by the three point shooting of Swindle with nine points while Jayna Blackwell and Jordan Hart each had eight points apiece.
Sikeston (1-1) will be in action again Dec. 3 when they play the second seed Delta Lady Wildcats in the Chaffee Tournament at 8:30 p.m.
In junior varsity action the Lady Bulldogs pulled off a thrilling win against in the Lady Donettes 47-45.
With the score tied 36-36 in the fourth quarter, Sikeston managed to spark an 8-1 run giving them the lead 44-37. Doniphan battled back to within two with 4.6 seconds to go in the game they had a chance to win with the score 47-45. However, due to quick hands, Tyanne Townsend stole the inbounds pass to seal the win.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Shelby Unger who had a 20 points.
