SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man was arrested Sunday afternoon for assaulting an alleged sexual assault offender who had been released from jail.

According to reports with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Calvin A. King, 27, was arrested and charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred late Sunday afternoon as Jack Pruitt, who was walking down the street, was spotted by King, who was driving down the street. King exited his vehicle and began chasing Pruitt down the street with a baseball bat. According to Pruitt, King caught him and struck him several times with the bat. King then left the scene in his vehicle.

DPS officers arrested King at his girlfriend's residence on Center Street shortly after the incident was reported. According to information gained during the investigation, the assault was the result of Pruitt's release from the Scott County Jail on sexual assault charges in which the suspect's girlfriend's child was a victim.

King told investigators that he was infuriated that Pruitt was out on bond for the charges he was facing and this prompted the assault.

King is being held at the Sikeston Department of Public Safety under $75,000 bond.
