Looking Back in Time at July 11

Friday, July 11, 2003

SIKESTON - W.J.B. Taylor has been transferred from Sikeston to the state headquarters in Jefferson City of the Missouri State Highway Department.

SIKESTON - With only a trifle more than 5 percent of Sikeston's 6,500 registered voters going to the polls to vote today, the annexation proposal won a "landslide" victory. The vote was 331 to 45.

SIKESTON - Jane Walls recently appeared on "The Price is Right" television game show, winning a car and a pool table. She and her husband, Donnie, and daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Larry Mullins of Union City, Tenn., drove to California in June.

CHARLESTON - With search warrant in hand, seven officers from the Department of Public Safety, a sheriff's reserve deputy and Dux, the Task Force drug dog, made an early morning raid Saturday in a west end housing project. The raid at 6:20 a.m. could have been a scene from "Top Cops," with the exception that no force was necessary. The end result was confiscation of some 24 ounces of crack cocaine and a .32 caliber Bersa automatic pistol and two arrests.

SIKESTON - While Congress struggles over proposed budget reduction bills, Missouri hospitals fear the worse. If the proposed budget cuts in Medicare, the federal entitlement program for the elderly, and Medicaid, the state and federal program for the poor and disabled, are passed, some hospitals will be forced to reduce employees. However, Missouri Delta Medical Center should not be among them.
