EFFINGHAM, Ill. - Carl E. Levitt, 74, died at 8:35 p.m. Jan. 6, 2004, at his home.
Born Jan. 5, 1930, in Effingham, son of the late Zona Marie Levitt, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Bill and Cora Levitt. A member of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Effingham, he was also a member of Effingham Knights of Columbus Council 665 and the Fourth Degree; American Legion Post 120 in Effingham, where he had held every office; 40 & 8 and Plumbers Local 149. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he had also served with the Illinois National Guard. He worked as a plumber for Wente Plumbing and Heating in Effingham for 33 years.
On April 18, 1951, he married Dorothy A. Tegenkamp who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Carl A. and Connie Levitt of Effingham; three daughters and sons-in-law, Christy and John Taylor and Julie and Ron Layton of Effingham and Leann and Scott Balcer of Sikeston, Mo.; and nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham, where a parish wake service at 6 p.m. will be followed at 7 p.m. by a Knights of Columbus rosary with Fourth Degree services.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Graveside military rites will be conducted at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Effingham.
