KENNETT -- For the last three years the Poplar Bluff boys track and field team has dominated the area. However, that all ended Tuesday night as Sikeston claimed the 14-team Kennett Invitational with 177 points, 14 better than Poplar Bluff's 163.
"It was a big win for us beating Poplar Bluff," said Sikeston coach Jerry Dement. "(Poplar Bluff) had not lost locally since 2001 so to beat like them was a big day for us.
Hopefully this gives us some confidence going into the conference and district meets."
Sikeston had several strong performances on the day, claiming first place in four events. Tyler Woodson won the 110 meter high hurdles at 15.0 while the 4 x 200 meter relay team also finished first with a time of 1:30.
Andy Croxford took first place in the shot put with a throw of 46' and Taylor Old took first in the discus at 131'.
While winning only four events, Sikeston took second place in 10 events helping the Bulldogs outscore the field.
In the girls side, Sikeston finished third behind Dexter and Poplar Bluff, despite losing Rachael Vining to injury in the first event.
"That took a lot of points," Dement said of Vining's injury. "We don't think it is too serious but we held her out of the rest of the meet."
Sikeston claimed one first place on the day with their 4 x 400 meter relay team crossing the line in 4:24.
"The girls are starting to come around," Dement said. "They are working real hard in practice and improving all the time. They have a good attitude.
"Our relay teams are really starting to improve and in our distance events Traci Jackson continues to get better from week-to-week."
Sikeston's varsity will compete in the Poplar Bluff Invitational Friday afternoon while the junior varsity will travel to Farmington this afternoon.
CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Junior High School track and field team took first in the Cape Relays Wednesday afternoon.
Sikeston's boys placed first in five events, highlighted by Chase Johnson setting the Sikeston eighth grade record in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13.5. Other first place finishers were Bryan Branion in the 100 meter dash, Tommie Strong in the long jump and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams.
"Our boys ran extremely well," said Sikeston coach Chris Hodgkiss. "I'm very proud of Chase Johnson for setting the record in the 800 and our relay teams continue to improve."
In the girls division Sikeston finished third behind Jackson and Cape Central.
"Our girls had a really good day also," Hodgkiss said. "Jackson and Cape have really strong girls programs and we finished behind them."
The Sikeston girls had two first place finishers in the 4 x 200 meter relay team and Chasmon Herron winning the 100 meter dash.
Sikeston will compete in the Jackson Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m.
