SIKESTON -- The Sikeston girls soccer team fell to state-ranked Cape Girardeau Notre Dame 5-1 on Wednesday evening at the Sikeston Sports Complex.

"They (Notre Dame) shellshocked us in the opening minutes with two quick goals," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long, "but we played them pretty even in the second half."

Sikeston (2-7), outshot 27 to 12, trailed 4-0 at the half, but battled to a 1-1 second period.

Allison Blurton, off an assist from Emily Bowman, lit the scoreboard for the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs at the 18-minute mark of the second half.

Sierra Ellis netted Notre Dame's first two goals, while Destiny Dirnberger, Emily Buehrle and Lauren Mehner added one apiece. Megan Holloway assisted on three goals. Kristen Boos and Buehrle had one assist each.

Sikeston goalie Audra Wooley recorded 22 saves.

Sikeston's junior varsity (0-5) suffered a 10-0 setback.

Sikeston, playing its third game in three days, travels to Marion, Ill. for a match today at 4 p.m.
