Kelly wraps up title

Friday, February 27, 2004

ORAN - The Kelly Lady Hawks basketball team wrapped up the Scott-Mississippi Conference championship with a 45-13 victory at Oran on Thursday.

Kelly (18-6) finished 7-0 in the conference.

The second-seeded Lady Hawks will play No. 7 East Prairie on Saturday evening at 5:30 in the Class 3, District 2 Tournament at Bloomfield.

"The girls had some motivation to come out and play hard tonight because it was the conference championship," said Kelly head coach Rod McQuerter. "We're very excited. This is a tough conference, Charleston, Delta and Scott Central are all very talented teams. We feel very fortunate to come out on top in the conference this year."

Kelly led 10-2 after one quarter and 25-4 at the half. The Lady Hawks extended the lead to 41-9 entering the fourth quarter where the mercy rule kept the clock running the entire quarter.

Kelly Essner led the Lady Hawks with 14 points. Mindy Robert followed up with 11 points.

"The girls just come out with the defensive intensity - probably the best team defense we've played all season," said McQuerter.
