SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs defeated Portageville 25-23, 25-14 in a volleyball match at the Field House on Tuesday.
"Again, the team started slowly and, for much of the first game, it was very close or we were behind," said Sikeston coach Steve Beydler.
Sikeston managed to squeeze out the win late in the first game.
Then in the second contest, the Lady Bulldogs picked up the pace about midway and won going away.
"We were in control most of the way in the second game," said Beydler, "but I never felt comfortable. I never felt like we had it in the bag. With a score of 25-14, you would think that it was a walk, but it really wasn't, at all."
Berneatress Hunt tied for the lead in kills with three and added a team-high two blocks for the Lady Bulldogs.
Khassie Patterson also had three kills, while Audra Wooley and Amber Anthony added two apiece.
As a team, Sikeston served six aces and had five service errors.
The Lady Bulldog junior varsity lost in three sets to Portageville.
After a first-game win of 25-22, the junior varsity Lady Bulldogs jumped to an early lead in game two, then squandered it in a 18-25 loss.
In a rather lethargic effort in the match-deciding contest, the Lady Bulldogs lost a close 23-25 decision. Sikeston travels to SEMO Conference opponent Chaffee on Thursday.
Sikeston will host conference foe Notre Dame next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
