Merchants reorganize

Sunday, October 3, 2004

I would like to thank all the teams that participated in our Annual Golf Classic. The weather was great and we were able to show our out-of-town guests a little Sikeston hospitality. We are looking forward to next year's golf tournament.

I would like to use my newspaper time this month to make the Sikeston and Miner communities aware of some changes going on with the Downtown Business Association. The Downtown Business Association, formerly known as the Downtown Merchants Association, has been reorganized under the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce. Robin Pace is our new chairman and Chuck Grant is the new vice chairman. The Association is meeting the first Thursday of the month at 8 a.m. at Susie's Bake Shoppe and Restaurant.

The group is currently working on the "Christmas Open House in Historic Downtown Sikeston" promotional event that will take place the weekend of Nov. 12-14. There will be carriage rides, children's story hours and holiday goodies and entertainment taking place throughout the weekend.

In addition to the promotional activities, the Association has started research into restoration and revitalization projects for the area. The Association wants to make the downtown area attractive for our local shoppers and create a tourism destination. The group will be working with state and local officials to coordinate efforts that will benefit everyone and will continue to beautify the Sikeston area. If you are interested in helping the Association contact Robin Pace at US Bank or Chuck Grant at A.G. Edwards or contact the Chamber of Commerce office to volunteer.

Finally, I would like to mention that the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sikeston Elks Club and Elks Auxiliary are sponsoring the 10th Annual Halloween Window Painting Contest on Saturday, Oct. 23. Applications must be turned into the Chamber office by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18. Participants must be not-for-profit youth organizations. The theme is Drug Awareness and Red Ribbon Week. For more information and an application contact the Chamber office at 573-471-2498.

As always for more information about the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce and other community information visit our Website at www.sikeston.net.
