One arrested in stabbing death

HAYTI - One person is in custody in connection with the stabbing death of a Pemiscot County woman.

At 8:46 p.m. Sunday, officers took a 31-year-old Hayti man into custody in connection with the death of Anita Elizabeth Sims, 42, of Homestown. Sims died from an apparent stab wound to the chest on Thursday.

The suspect, whose name was not released by authorities, was taken into custody at 8:45 p.m. Sunday. He is being held on charges of second degree murder and armed criminal action.

Authorities began their investigation after being called to the Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release issued by Hayti Police Chief Paul Sheckell. Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall advised law enforcement officials a short time later Sims died from her injuries.

Assisting Hayti Police in the investigation were the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control, the State Violent Crime Support Unit of Jefferson City, Bootheel Drug Task Force and the Caruthersville Police Department.
