SIKESTON - Pfc. Luther B. "Red" Hutchason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Hutchason of Sikeston Route 1, was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement in action on July 8 in the vicinity of Rosignano, Italy. He braved heavy enemy artillery and machine gunfire to deliver several important messages.

BENTON - Donald R. Bohannon, savings bonds chairman for Scott County reports that a total of $27,125 worth of bonds were purchased by residents of the county during August, bringing the county's total for the year, thus far, to $256,372 or 45.1 percent of its quota.

SIKESTON - Deborah Ann Jackson, 14, daughter of Alice Jackson of Sikeston, was crowned Junior Miss Sikeston Thursday night during Cotton Carnival festivities. Other winners in the contest were Amy DeWitt, 14, first alternate, daughter of Gary and Debi DeWitt of Sikeston; and Deneka Borders, 14, second alternate, daughter of Ron and Connie Borders of Sikeston. There were 25 contestants in the contest.

SIKESTON - Children from Stay-n-Play Day Care used the warm weather Thursday to pick out a pumpkin for their daycare. Christopher Flanagan, 2, took time out of this exhausting activity to relax in one of the big pumpkins at Garden Lane Nursery.

SIKESTON - Sikeston kindergartners might want to take some time out to have their parents read to them. Through Ronald's Reading Ranger Program, sponsored by McDonald's Restaurant, children whose parents read 10 books to them receive a coupon for a free Happy Meal at McDonald's. The students need only show the books to their teachers.
