SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team played host to the Poplar Bluff Mules on Monday night, and let the win slip right past them, as the Mules defeated Sikeston 1-0 in regulation.
"I knew it would be a tale of two halves," Sikeston head coach Derrick Long said. "I knew it would come down to who could score enough to win."
The game was dead-locked at zeros, until Poplar Bluff's Kenyon Francis broke free and took a shot, at 17:00, that just caught enough of the left corner post to bank in for the only goal of the game.
"They got a shot off the post," Long said. "(Scott) Droddy just had no chance to make a play."
"They have a strong team," Papp said. "They press in the back well and they attack with numbers."
"We just played well enough to win tonight," he added. "There was a lot of passion out here."
Sikeston's record falls to 7-14-1 on the season, while Poplar Bluff's record improves to 5-18-1 with the victory.
"We've got some stuff to work on this week," Long said. "We start districts this Saturday against Fredericktown. It would've been nice to get this win tonight going into districts."
Sikeston will play at Notre Dame in their first game of districts on Saturday, taking on Fredericktown at 4 p.m.
