SIKESTON - Tommy Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Roberts, left for Nashville, Tenn., where he will attend Peabody College for the coming year.


SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. Walter Carr of Sikeston are parents of a daughter.

SIKESTON - Dr. Howard Johnson has been named president-elect to the Southeast Missouri Dental Society at its annual meeting Thursday in Cape Girardeau. Dr. Charles Post, of Poplar Bluff, was elected president.

MOREHOUSE - Vandals smashed three plate glass windows valued at $350 at Neal's Auto Parts Sunday morning.


MINER - The Miner Fire Department used three pumpers and six firemen to battle a shed fire Wednesday at the F.M. Whitaker residence on Route 2. The fire started about 3:15 p.m. and was extinguished about one and a half hours later. A neighboring field also caught fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.


SIKESTON - Playing this weekend at the Mall Theater in the Kingsway Plaza Mall is "Maid to Order" with Ally Sheedy. At the Malco Midtowner Center are Madonna in "Who's That Girl," "Can't Buy Me Love" with Patrick Dempsey and "House II, The Second Story."

SIKESTON - Friday's crowning of Miss Sikeston carried on a long-standing tradition. During the contest, Amanda Gilmore became the 1997 Miss Sikeston. Fifth runner-up was Tiffany Grojean; Erynn Hedrick, fourth runner-

up; Michele Moll, third runner-up; Jennifer Parker, second runner-up and Kaci Nelson, first runner-up.


SIKESTON - The Cotton Club Pioneers sponsored a golf tournament Sept. 12 at the Bootheel Golf Club. The event raised a total of $3,474, which was donated to the Kenny Rogers Cerebral Palsy Center.


NEW MADRID - Just how big is NMCC? When all 7,165 pounds of New Madrid County Central football players were called up on a trailer for introductions at the annual bonfire, the steel frame buckled, splitting the wood, bringing the whole unit down to the ground.
