CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston girls soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Class 3, District 1 Tournament with a 4-0 victory against Fredericktown on Saturday at Notre Dame High School.
Sikeston will play top-seeded Notre Dame today at 5 p.m.
It was the Lady Bulldogs' second victory against fifth-seeded Fredericktown in just three days so Sikeston head coach Derrick Long said the girls knew what they were up against.
"Right from the start we controlled the game," said Long. "We had just played this team Thursday so we had them pegged. We knew who their go-to girls were and we covered them pretty tight on defense."
Sikeston, seeded fourth, scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and were never threatened.
Allison Blurton got it started with a goal at the 3:00 mark on an assist from Paige Silverthorn.
Caroline McClung added a goal on an assist from Blurton at the 8:00 mark. Blurton then scored another goal on an assist from McClung at the 10:00.
McClung added a second goal on an assist from Erin Dement at the 29:00 mark.
"We tried to hit Ali with some balls where she could use her speed," said Long. "She scored two goals and assisted another in the first 10 minutes. Notre Dame will probably double-team Ali and we'll have to deal with that."
Sikeston out-shot Fredericktown 29-to-5. Lady Bulldog goalie Audra Wooley had five saves.
"Our team defense was strong," said Long.
"We limited them to five shots and one in the whole second half. We didn't score any in the second half but they packed it in on defense. But when you have a 4-0 cushion at the half then you're probably not quite as aggressive."
Second-seeded Perryville will play No. 3 St. Vincent at 7 p.m. tonight in the other semifinal match.
