SIKESTON - Gayle Collins, 86, died at 8:40 p.m. May 18, 2004 at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.

Born April 1, 1918, in Sikeston, daughter of the late Foy F. and Fletia M. Edmondson Collins, she was a member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. For 28 years, she was a lab technician and assistant for Dr. T.C. McClure in the McClure Clinic. She attended the first licensed practical nursing (LPN) class at Missouri Delta Medical Center in 1963 and 1964, making the highest grade on the State Board Exam up to that date. From 1964-84, she worked for Missouri Delta Medical Center, during which time she was appointed to the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

In 1976, she attended Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff and was a member and officer in the Sikeston LPN chapter since its inception. She then became personnel coordinator for the Sikeston Convalescent Center, which her brothers, Bud and Gene Collins, opened in 1973. She retired in 1988. In addition to having been chairwoman for the Alzheimer's Association and Cancer Research, she was most proud to have been present and assisted at the deliveries of all 14 nieces and nephews.

Survivors include: one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Nadine Collins of Sikeston; and one sister, Ruth Anne Ziegenhorn of Sikeston; six nephews, five nieces and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Collins and Bud Collins; and one sister, Maxine Crenshaw; and three nephews.

Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday.

The Rev. Dr. Rick Ramsey, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sikeston and the Rev. Dr. James Fitch, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Gallatin, Tenn., will officiate.

Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.

Pallbearers will be: Joe Crenshaw, David Ziegenhorn, Mike Collins, Wayne Collins, Randy Collins and Gaylen Kruger.
