POPLAR BLUFF -- Cape Central was shut out for the first time this season, losing 35-0 Friday night in its district opener to Poplar Bluff.
Central managed just 115 yards of total offense, led by 67 rushing yards from junior Cantrell Andrews.
Quarterback Chase Johnson ran for 28 yards and threw for 22 more on 6-of-16 passing. He threw a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions.
Zach Ferguson ran for 93 yards while fullbacks Aaron Ellis and Kerey Smith combined for 120 more for Poplar Bluff.
The Mules (4-4, 1-1 SEMO) beat Cape Central (1-7, 0-2) for the first time since 2001 and shut out the Tigers for the first time in 16 years.
The closest Central got to the end zone was on its first drive of the game, but the Tigers turned the ball over on downs at the Poplar Bluff 20.
The Mules opened the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run by Smith just five plays and 101 seconds after the kickoff, but the extra-point try missed as Poplar Bluff led 6-0 after one quarter.
Midway through the second, quarterback Todd Bullington hit Ben Knuckles for a 34-yard pass that set up a 26-yard touchdown run by Ellis. Bullington ran in for the conversion and a 14-0 Poplar Bluff lead.
