Portageville shoots 57 percent from field in victory

KELLY -- The Portageville Bulldogs proved to be too much for the home team Kelly Hawks Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs went on to rout the Hawks, 64-

39.

Portageville head coach Jim Bidewell said that his teams focus was right where it needed to be. "I think we're playing better," he said. "We played hard, we actually set up and ran an offense tonight. As long as we can play hard then that's about all you can really ask right now."

Portageville was able to capitalize on the Hawks many turnovers to put the game in their favor for most of the time. Also, Kelly could not seem to get anything to fall, shooting under 50 percent from the field. On the other side, Portageville shot 57 percent.

"I was disappointed really with our effort overall," Kelly head coach Nathan Wills said. "We need to be more disciplined offensively and defensively."

"It's a long process and we just got to try and get better each game and right now its one step forward and two steps back."

From the opening tip-off, Portageville seemed to be in total control. They were able to score six unanswered points to start the game, until eventually Kelly put a two-spot on the board to end the Bulldogs' run.

Portageville outscored the Hawks 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams seemed to trade basket-for-basket in the second quarter, bringing the score to 27-17 at the end of the first half.

The Bulldogs began to pull away at the start of the second half. They went on a 9-2 run to open the third quarter, putting the deficit at 17 points at the 5:17 mark.

The Hawks only managed to score seven points in the third, going down 47-

24.

The fourth was more of the same from both teams. Portageville continued to score, as Kelly struggled to find any rhythm.

Portageville (2-1) was led by Byron Wright with 21 points, he also added four rebounds and was 4-5 from the free throw line. Terrale Jones added 17 points and eight rebounds. Dometric Trotter added eight to the Bulldogs total.

Josh DeBrock led the Hawks (0-3) with 15 points and Chris Cooper added seven. Zach Essner scored four and pulled down four rebounds.

Portageville's next game will be at Kennett Thursday night. Kelly will host St. Vincent on Friday.

In the junior varsity game, Portageville pulled out a win against Kelly, 52-38.

Portageville was led by Fred Treadwell's 25 points. Radraius Booker scored 13 and Fernando Minnis had six.

Kelly's Etan Lee scored 12. Cody Kern had nine and Micheal Fischer scored seven.
