CHARLESTON -- Autopsy reports indicate a Mississippi County man died of injuries sustained in a car accident Thursday instead of the stabbing wound he'd received prior to the fatal crash.
According to Mississippi County Coroner Terry Parker, Clifford E. "Cliff" Johnson, 28, of Charleston died of results of multiple injuries sustained in a car accident Thursday while en route to the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
"The stab wound (below the left collar bone on the left front shoulder) was superficial and not a contributing factor to the cause of death," Parker said today.
Johnson had been stabbed by an acquaintance Thursday evening and was attempting to seek medical treatment traveling on Missouri Highway 62, about three miles west of Charleston, when he struck the vehicle driven by Bobby J. Wilkerson, 44, of Bertrand, head-on.
Johnson and Wilkerson were pronounced dead at the scene by Parker.
Neal Frazier, Mississippi County assistant prosecuting attorney, said no formal charges have been made in the stabbing of Johnson and no one is in custody at this time. At press time, Frazier hadn't reviewed the autopsy report yet.
