BENTON - Cornelius Z. Dirnberger, 81, died Sept. 14, 2007 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born April 27, 1926, in Benton, son of the late Michael and Colletta LeGrand Dirnberger, he was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Benton. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 20, 1944 to Nov. 21, 1946. He was past Commander of VFW Post #5368 in Morley and had been a member of the American Legion for 30 years. He was a lifelong resident of Benton, where he farmed for many years and served with the Soil and Water Conservation Committee for 10 years.
On Sept. 25, 1948, in Benton, he married Geneva Scherer who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: three sons, Ralph Dirnberger and Paul Dirnberger of Benton and Donald Dirnberger of Kelso; one daughter, Doris Breymeyer of Benton; two sisters, Bernice Jansen of Cape Girardeau and LaVerne Wilhelm of Scott City; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one great-grandchild.
Services were held today at St. Denis Catholic Church. The Rev. Normand Varone officiated.
Burial with full military rites followed at St. Denis Church Cemetery, in Benton.
Ford and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
