SULLIVAN -- Billy J. Matthews Sr., 79, formerly of Sikeston, died Dec. 21, 2007, at his home.
He was the son of the late Clyde and Lucille Inman Matthews. Originally from the Bootheel area of Missouri, he was an all-conference tackle for the Sikeston Bulldogs and received a football scholarship to Arkansas State. In 1963, he moved to Sullivan to work for Craig Distributing Company of Salem. A longtime member of the NRA, after retirement he worked for many years for the Dickey family at their Outdoor Gear store.
On June 20, 1948, he married Norma Jean Woods who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son Billy Matthews of Sullivan; one daughter, Mary Jane Happy of Kerriville, Texas; and two grandchildren, Lisa Kelley of Phoenix and James Happy of Kerriville.
Graveside services were conducted Dec. 26 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.
Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan was in charge of arrangements.
