60 years ago

SIKESTON - Sikeston High School's 1947 Bulldogs opened their grid season Friday night at Dexter with a 21-0 victory over the Bearcats of that school.


SIKESTON - Miss Addie Mae Jones, who has been living in Santa Monica, Calif. the past five years, returned to Sikeston. She has purchased and is now operating the Vogue Beauty Shop.

CHARLESTON - Paintings by Mildred B. Carpenter and the late Fred Green Carpenter will be featured at the October art show at the Mississippi County Historical Society and Art Gallery.


BLOOMFIELD - Marilyn Jean Rhodes of Advance was named Miss Stoddard County. Kathy McCann of Dexter was first runner-up and Patricia Bollinger of Bell City was second runner-up.

SIKESTON - Audra Lynne Sherman, 14, of Sikeston, was chosen Junior Miss Sikeston in ceremonies Thursday night at the 43rd Annual American Legion Cotton Carnival. Second runner-up was 14-year-old Melissa Flagg and first runner-up was Lisa Bryan, 14.


EAST PRAIRIE - The City Council Thursday evening approved restrictive regulations for pit bulls, dobermans and other dangerous dogs. However, the council disallowed a regulation that would have prohibited pit bulls from the city.

SIKESTON - Crystal Stokes, the daughter of Kenny and Sharon Stokes, was crowned Junior Miss Sikeston at the Cotton Carnival. First runner-up was Ashley Duncan, daughter of Pam Davis; and second runner-up was Devon Suri Pasley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pasley.


SAN DIEGO - Jerome A. Hinson of Morehouse, Mo., 34-year-old son of Janet H. Hinson of Morehouse, is a member of the crew of the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie. The ship, along with other U.S. Navy ships, has been making its presence known in the Middle East for decades.


SIKESTON - Kenneth Vaughn recently graduated from the Institute of Electronic Technology in Paducah, Ky. A 1995 Sikeston graduate, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Vaughn of Sikeston.
