SIKESTON -- Fred L. Nelson, 86, died June 30, 2006, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born May 8, 1920, in Hartman, Ark., son of the late Jess and Birtha Matlock Nelson, he was of the Baptist belief and had worked on the family farm in Arkansas and later in southeast Missouri for over 50 years before retiring in 1980.
On Jan. 27, 1988, he married Ruby F. Cochran Crowden, who died June 22, 2006.
Survivors include: two brothers, Carl Nelson of Lebanon, Tenn. and Ed Nelson of Gatlin, Tenn.; two sisters, Maggie Carter of Morehouse and Eva Pruett of Sikeston; two stepsons, Jessie Crowden of Gorham, Ill. and Kenneth Crowden of Bell City; three stepdaughters, Shirley Rodgers of Sikeston, Peggy Witthoft of Morley and Dorothy Crider of Jonesboro, Ark.; and 15 step grandchildren, 39 step great-grandchildren and 12 step great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Monday at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. The Rev. Michael Blissett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Walker Cemetery at Bloomfield.
Pallbearers will be: Steve McAnnelly, Carl Casey, Rodger Casey, Delmer Carter, Kenneth Martin and Larry Casey.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Kenneth Crider, Jimmy Burton, Kavin Snyder, Paul Holifield, Gary Holifield and Jordan Holifield.
