NAPLES, Fla. - Carolyn Ruth Barker Smithson, 63, passed away Oct. 7, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Cairo, Ill., to Opal Morgan Barker and Ben H. Barker of East Prairie. Carolyn spent her early life in East Prairie graduating with the EPHS Class of 1961. Carolyn was a loving friend, sister, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was known for her beautiful smile and her love and exuberance for life. She was an accomplished stained glass artist and created beautiful pieces of art that exemplified her love of color and light.
Survivors include: one daughter, Julia Di Giallorenzo, and son-in-law, Benny of San Jose, Calif.; one son, Jeffrey Smithson, and daughter-in-law, Celeste, of Hendersonville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Bella Di Giallorenzo, Christian, Jeremy, Collin, and Madeline Smithson; one brother, Sam Barker of East Prairie; and one half sister, Mera Ben Bess of St. Louis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Randolph "Randy" Barker; two half brothers, Bill Barker and Harry Blaine Barker; and one half sister; Eugenia Barker Adkison.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Shelby Funeral Chapel in East Prairie.
