Holiday events nearing

Sunday, October 2, 2005

It is hard to believe that Halloween is right around the corner and that means the Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring the 11th Annual Halloween Window Painting Contest, Saturday, Oct. 22.

The next big event after the Halloween contest will be Downtown Christmas Open House which will held Nov. 4 - 6. There will be carriage rides, Santa Claus and the stores in downtown Sikeston will have extended hours. Each year this event gets bigger, with people strolling through downtown, enjoying the Christmas decorations, activities and visiting with their friends and neighbors. We hope to see you down there.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our area churches, service clubs and civic organizations as well as our business community for their support during the hurricane relief efforts.

The Chamber staff has had the privilege of representing our community while assisting evacuees with their needs. It was heartwarming to experience the outpouring of support that just seemed to appear out of nowhere.

The individuals and families we served were overwhelmed with the generosity from the area. We often saw tears of gratitude and were given many, many hugs. The stories were amazing and difficult and you couldn't help feeling sorry for these people who lost their homes, their businesses, their jobs and here they are asking for help from complete strangers, something they have never had to do before.

As a Chamber director it made me proud to see how Sikeston, Miner, Scott County and New Madrid County came together to organize our efforts. We even had financial support from the Big Prairie Jaycees in Matthews, who heard we had evacuees in the area and quickly put together a benefit dinner and raised $1,450.

The recipients have been very grateful and have said they will tell others how wonderful our community has been to them. I tell them that when things are better and they are on their feet again to please come back and visit us for some fun at the rodeo or at Cotton Carnival time.

It has been a great experience for me to see our citizens pull together to help others and it has shown the possibilities of what we can accomplish in a short time when we all pull together.

Once again, thanks to those who have helped with all the hurricane relief efforts in the area and nationwide.
