Warning issued by patrol

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

JEFFERSON CITY - A recent series of illegal non-U.S. Lottery notification announcements has prompted a warning from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Only state-run lotteries are legal in Missouri, said. Capt. Ronald K. Replogle, director of the Division of Drug and Crime Control. Any lottery announcements a Missouri resident receives by mail that are identified outside of the United States should be considered scams, he added.

Evidence of these scams have been recently located in Central Missouri and generated from Australia and British Columbia, Canada. Those targeted by these mailings appear to be the elderly.

Anyone who might receive or have received these fraudulent lottery documents should avoid any correspondence with the solicitor and dispose of the letter immediately, the Patrol advised.
