SIKESTON - Ben Thorpe, former manager of the local Sterling store, left Monday to assume managership of a Sterling store in Leland, Minn. His family will follow soon.

SIKESTON - Shad Old, insurance man, has been appointed a Junior Chamber International senator by Edward Merders, Fairbanks, Alaska, and president of the World Jaycees. Appointment is based on a Jaycee's activities.

SIKESTON - Sikeston High School students participated in a mock council meeting Friday morning. The activity promoted government education for the students. Tim Kellick, student city attorney, pondered over suggestions brought forth at the meeting.

SIKESTON - The search is on for a community to house a new 30-bed detention center and Sikeston would like to be selected. Patrick Doyen, assistant director of the Missouri Division of Youth Services, and Bill Vaughn, regional administrator, met with a dozen Sikeston officials Thursday to discuss the site selection process. Sikeston officials are concerned that they may not be as far up on the list of applicants because they have no land to offer.


SIKESTON - Three candidates for City Council addressed the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce, but only two were asking for votes. Mayor Terry Bryant, who is seeking re-election along with businessmen Bill Mitchell and Peter Myers spoke at Thursday's annual SACC general membership luncheon. Also Burch Food Service Inc. was honored as Business of the Month.


SIKESTON - Raben Tire hosted its annual pancake customer appreciation day Friday morning, which started with people lined up to the door for their free, unlimited pancakes and sausages.
