Monday, September 19, 2005

LILBOURN -- Gladys Woods Norton, 85, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 17, 2005.

Born Feb. 7, 1920, in Eva, Tenn., she was one of nine children born to the late Claude and Frances Allen Woods. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lilbourn, where she served as the church secretary for 25 years. She was a dedicated gardener who enjoyed reading, cooking, canning, sewing and St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

On March 16, 1940, at Lilbourn, she married James Norton who preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 2003. All her life, she was a farmer's wife. They spent 62 years living on the land they owned and farmed. Their devotion to each other was a true example of love and the foundation of which their family was built. They had three daughters and one son-in-law, Janet Wilburn and Libby Norton of Sikeston and Peggy and Cleo Beeson of Advance.

Other survivors include: one sister, Orene Holland of Cape Girardeau; one brother, T.J. Woods of Lilbourn; her grandchildren, Michelle Perry and Teresa Tumbleson of Sikeston, Reese Beeson of Advance and Jami Burnett of Zalma; her great-grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Perry and Spencer and Emily Tumbleson of Sikeston, Michael Story of Advance and Paul and Elizabeth Burnett of Zalma.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Curtis Woods, Cleo "Skeb" Woods," Arvil Woods and an infant brother, R.T. Woods; two sisters, Onie Woods Allred and an infant sister, Irene Woods; her son-in-law, Charles Wilburn; and a great-grandson, Zach Beeson.

Gladys had many wonderful qualities, but is remembered best for her ability to see the good in everything and everybody. She had a deep faith in God, which was the greatest legacy she handed down to her family. This faith allowed her to overcome adversities in her life in a way that will always be remembered by those who knew her best. She is not gone for good, but waits just inside the Eastern Gate over there.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Lilbourn, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Bob Medlock, a retired minister, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Mounds Park Cemetery at Lilbourn.

Pallbearers will be: Reese Beeson, Curtis Tumbleson, Bert Perry, Michael Story, Paul Burnett, Spencer Tumbleson, Ryan Perry and Austin Perry.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Jim Lovett, Dickie Weeks, Bill Jones, Frank Hadder, Tom McClarty, Terry Hawkins and smiling down from Heaven, Joe Edward Albright.

Ponder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
