EAST PRAIRIE -- Over the past month of June, the Mississippi County Boxing Team stayed quite busy, traveling on the road for competition and also completing their home show in East Prairie.

"The past month has been full of surprises," explains Coach Brad Wick.

On June 16 the team traveled to St. Charles, Missouri for a show put on by the North County Boxing Team at the Heart of St. Charles Convention Center. Mike Warren, Junior Gephart, Matt Gephart and Chris Gephart all competed in this show.

Mike Warren, competing at 132 lbs., was stopped in the second round by Alec Miller, a fighter from the North County Team.

"Mike has improved so much over the past few months. He just needs to put it all together," Coach Wick said.

Junior Gephart, competing at 155, lost a very close decision to Nick Cole, a fighter from the Tandy Boxing Team from St. Louis. Junior started in good against a well experienced fighter leading good with his jabs and setting up good combinations.

"Junior is so strong, and he just wont quit with the pressure. Most guys would have been dropped by the combinations he caught in the second, but he just kept coming.", Coach Wick said.

Junior and Cole were non stop action for the whole third round as the fight came to an end.

Matt Gephart, fighting at 200(-), stepped in with Josh Barnes of The Knuckles Gym. Matt lost due to Referee stopping contest in the second round. "Matt got an eight count and afterwards went to touch gloves with his opponent when Barnes attacked with a two-piece combination that jarred Matt, causing the ref to stop the fight," Coach Wick said. "In some peoples' eyes it was sort of a cheap shot, but the kid was only doing what he was trained to do and Matt paid for it."

Matt Gephart and Josh Barnes have a rematch set for July 28th in St. Louis.

Ending the evening was Chris Gephart, fighting in the Super Heavyweight Division against Terrell Harris of the 12th and Park Boxing Gym in St. Louis. This was to be one of Chris' toughest fights yet as he was about to step into the ring with a guy that has won the Golden Gloves two times and very well known by most coaches and fighters.

"I was very nervous going into the ring with this guy," Chris stated about his match-up.

Chris won by a unanimous decision in the three-round bout.

On June 18, the Mississippi County Boxing Team traveled to St. Louis to compete in the annual "Juneteenth" show held at the city park.

Mike Warren, Tyler Latamondeer, Billy Mace and Matt Gephart all traveled to compete in the show.

Billy Mace started off in the 70lb. weight division against Michael Edwards of the Cherokee Boxing team. This was a last minute change to the card, putting Mace against a well experienced fighter. Mace was stopped in the second round by the Referee.

"The first round was a tough one for Billy. Billy was just out-matched, and I didn't want him to get hurt," Coach Wick stated.

Next up was Mike Warren, competing in the 132 weight class against Damar Patterson of the Tandy Boxing Team. Warren gave up 15lbs. to Patterson going into the fight, which gave Patterson the edge on power. "I was told that the kid had no fights and that was the only reason I accepted this fight for Mike, I would never put any of my kids into a match that would get them intentionally hurt.", Coach Wick stated about the match, "After the fight started I realized that this kid had some fighting experience....", he also stated.

Warren withdrew after advising his coach he couldn't continue with his opponent.

Finishing the day for the Mississippi County Boxing Team was Matt Gephart, who stepped into the ring with Matt Washington of the 12th and Park Boxing Team.

"This kid was tall and in excellent shape. We knew right off the bat this was going to be hard, but Matt needed a win after the turnout from his bout on the 16th," Coach Wick stated.

It ended in a split decision win for Gephart.

"Matt needed this win, he needed to realize that the loss he took on the 16th didn't take anything out of him....", Coach Wick stated about Gephart.

This show was an invite-only show putting Chris as a representative of Team St. Louis in the Super Heavyweight Division.

"I was basically told that Chris probably didn't stand a chance, but they wanted us to get some experience and exposure for our team," Coach Wick said. "I told the promoter to book it, and we'll see him Thursday night."

After three rounds, Gephart was given the unanimous decision and received a large plaque for his win.
