Kelly softball ends tourney 3-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Kelly Lady Hawks softball team participated in the Jackson Invitational tournament on Saturday, at the Shawnee Sports Complex in Cape Girardeau, taking home the consolation prize, after finishing the day with a 3-1 record.

The Lady Hawks lost their first game of the event, to Seckman by a score of 9-3. Sarah Ruff finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run while Casey Kern and Brittany Brantley each collected two hits.

Kelly fared well in the afternoon as they defeated Nerinx Hall, 6-4. Katee Moore led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Heather Beggs earned the win on the mound.

The Lady Hawks earned the consolation title with a victory over Poplar Bluff by a score of 3-1. Riley was the winning pitcher while Ruff and Ashley Flahardy both went 2-for-3.

The Notre Dame Bulldogs won the title defeating Seckman 4-2 in the championship game.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action today at St. Vincent-Perryville, at 4 p.m.

PERRYVILLE -- The Sikeston volleyball team competed in the Perryville Invitational Tournament Saturday, ending the day with a record of 1-2-1.

Sikeston defeated Fredericktown 25-19, 25-16 and split a close match with Saxony Lutheran 26-28, 27-25. The Lady Bulldogs came out on the short end against Perryville 17-25, 17-25 and Bismark 9-25, 15-25.

Charleston also competed in the tournament losing all four matches. Charleston fell to St. Vincent 9-25, 14-25; Arcadia Valley 10-25, 8-25; Ste. Genevieve 14-25, 17-25 and Steelville 15-25, 19-25.

St. Vincent of Perryville won the tournament.

Sikeston will be back in action tonight when they host Bloomfield. Junior varsity action will begin at 6 p.m.

The Dexter and Kelly cross country teams competed in the Cape Central Invitational on Saturday.

The Dexter girls finished seventh in the event while the Kelly boys placed ninth.

Dexter's Sammy Waldner (21:05) placed tenth on the girl's side while Kelly's Jara Johnson (21:14) placed 12th.

On the boys side, Dexter's Jason Kohlbaker (17:55) placed 14th while Kelly's top finisher was Mike Warren (19:10).
