BENTON -- The Kelly Lady Hawks softball team fell victim to the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules 8-6 Thursday afternoon.
Poplar Bluff jumped on Kelly early, scoring all eight runs in the first two innings with three in the first and five in the second.
Kelly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first and another three in the second but could only add a single run in the fourth, despite plenty of chances.
Kelly finished the game with 12 hits on the day and Poplar Bluff tallied 11. Londyn Backfish led the Lady Hawks going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Casey Kern had a perfect day at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI while senior Sarah Ruff finished 2-4 with an RBI. Lana Whitworth and Haley Glastetter both added doubles for Kelly.
"Both teams put the ball in play today," said Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge. "We just couldn't get the runners in when we had the chance. We left runners on in every inning."
Jessica Riley was saddled with the loss for the Lady Hawks after relieving Heather Beggs in the first inning. Riley gave up three earned runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.
Kelly (15-6) will be in action again Monday when they travel to Jackson to play the Lady Indians at 4 p.m.
