SIKESTON - Cpl. Lynar Carter, who is stationed with the Air Transport Command on the Admiralty Islands in the Philippines and William H. Vinson, Water Tender 3-c, who is serving with the Navy on a rescue ship, enjoyed a visit together on the islands Aug. 10 and 11. Both Sikeston men have been serving in the South Pacific for the past 15 months.


SIKESTON - One day only, Aug. 28, at the Sikeston ball park, was the all new Clyde Beatty circus with Clyde Beatty in person.

CHARLESTON - With 13 letterman returning and a good turnout, the Charleston Bluejays have drawn the respect of other coaches in the Southeast Missouri Conference.

SIKESTON - Sikeston Department of Public Safety firefighters were called to a house fire at approximately 9:45 a.m. today on the corner of Olive and West Gladys streets. The interior received extensive fire and smoke damage.

MATTHEWS - After several years of planning and fund-raising, the dream of a new playground for the students in Matthews has become a reality. On Aug. 22, the Matthews PTO had its annual open house along with the special ceremony dedicating the new playground to their former friend and classmate, the late Clay Porter. The new playground is a combined effort of the Matthew PTO and community volunteers.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston High School girls' tennis squad, who opened their season with a 3-6 road loss Monday, turned things around, recording a 7-2 victory over the host Chaffee squad.
