JONESBORO, Ga. - James W. "Jim" Wheat, 62, died April 8, 2005.

Born July 27, 1942, in Morehouse, Mo., to Wanda Louise Wheat of St. Petersburg, Fla., and the late Victor Virgil Wheat, he was a sergeant major in the U.S. Army serving for over 20 years as an intelligence specialist and receiving many citations during his military career.

Surviving in addition to his mother are: his wife, Joan Patricia Wheat of Jonesboro; four daughters, Shelley DeLisle, Jody Miller and JoAnne Miller of Phoenix City, Ala., and Sherry Pierce of LaGrange, Ga.; two sons, Kenny Wheat of Dallas, Ga., and Robert DeLisle of Powder Springs, Ga.; two brothers, Steve Wheat of St. Petersburg and Robert Wheat of Fenton, Mo.; three sisters, Viki Peterson of Denver, Colo., Janet Sanchez of St. Petersburg and Lissie Wheat of the state Indiana; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Cantonment Chapel in Ft. McPherson with Col. Sonny Moore, chaplain, officiating.

Burial followed at the Andersonville National Cemetery with military honors. Lt. Col. John Powledge, chaplain, officiated.

Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors of McDonough, Ga., were in charge of arrangements.
