SIKESTON - Miss Laura Dover, who is leaving Sikeston to accept a position with Simpson Oil Co. in Charleston, was given a surprise party Thursday by employees of the Scott County Milling Co. Miss Dover had been an employee of the company for the past three years.
SIKESTON - It was almost a unanimous opinion of Southeast Missouri, especially the Bootheel, to bring back word to their respective city councils in favor of daylight savings time. The meeting of mayors was held at the Holiday Inn Thursday noon with 18 cities and towns represented. The vote favoring daylight savings time beginning April 25 and ending Oct. 31 for Southeast Missouri was 17-1.

SIKESTON - Marietta Whitworth was named Woman of the Year Tuesday evening at the 24th Annual Banquet conducted at the Masonic Temple. According to Sue Ziegenhorn, a B&PW member, two local organizations nominated Mrs. Whitworth for the honor.
MOREHOUSE - Before he meets with the House Water Resources Subcommittee, Congressman Bill Emerson made use of his own local resources - Southeast Missouri farmers who have to deal with federal legislation. "At long last we will be considering a common-sense clean water bill that is friendly to farmers and agri-producers," Emerson said.
EAST PRAIRIE - Grandpas - fun, caring, fountains of knowledge and great story tellers and, in Don Shaner's case, someone who uses his personal "grandpa" expertise in his profession as teacher/counselor. Grandpa Don has become well known to kindergarten students at Martin Elementary School where he and "Bunny," his rabbit puppet, meet each Monday.
