EAST PRAIRIE -- An area man received a gunshot wound after resisting arrest and attempting to run over an East Prairie police officer Sunday in East Prairie.
According to East Prairie Police Chief Danny Lafferty, at 7:24 p.m. Sunday, an officer with the East Prairie Police Department was attempting to make a traffic stop on a vehicle. After the vehicle stopped, it then rammed the police car and fled.
A pursuit began and the officer chased the vehicle, Lafferty said. The vehicle then turned into a circle drive off Center Street in East Prairie.
"The officer stopped the patrol car and attempted to make contact with the vehicle. The vehicle then accelerated at a high speed and attempted to run over the officer," Lafferty said.
The officer fired several rounds from his gun into the vehicle, wounding the driver. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Lafferty said the case was turned over for investigation to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Names are being withheld pending filing of charges.
