The youngsters collected 6,703 canned goods, and more than 1,500 other food items in Sikeston which they brought to the Bootheel Food Bank where they unloaded the bags. The food bank will use the items to assist other food pantries throughout Southeast Missouri.
Also taking part in the food collection were Scouts in Charleston, New Madrid and Portageville. Lynn Hasty, Scout master of Troop 59, said the number of items donated this year was up locally as well as in the Greater St. Louis Area Council, which includes Southeast Missouri.
"What I heard was the (the Council) collected over 2.5 million food items Saturday," Hasty said.
