SIKESTON - Response by the people of Sikeston and the Sikeston area has been enthusiastic to the Missouri Delta Community Hospital Drive. Solicitors are working to raise $160,000 in an area covered by a 25-mile radius of Sikeston.

ORAN - Earnest Glastetter, 33, was shot in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun near here this morning when another man from Sikeston reportedly was firing at a squirrel located between the two hunters.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities is currently testing coal from a different source in the power plant in Sikeston. The coal is being purchased through Western Fuels, which has found a less costly supply of coal from the area of Sturgis, Ky., Board Director Richard Inman explained this week.

EAST PRAIRIE - Sweet Corn Festival activities continued Monday evening with the selection of the Little Mister and Miss Sweet Corn Cuties. The "cuties" are Lori White, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben White of Sikeston, and 3-year-old Bryan Grant Mainord, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Mainord of East Prairie.

SIKESTON - The Standard-Democrat has been sold by American Publishing Company Inc. to Publisher Michael Jensen, former General Manager Don Culbertson and Gary Rust, president of Rust Communications of Cape Girardeau. "Today marks an important beginning in the history of this newspaper as we return it to local ownership. Our goal is to provide the best newspaper value for our readers and advertisers and to be an important ingredient to the growth of Sikeston and southeast Missouri," Jensen said.

SIKESTON - "Considering the heat and the quality of the opponent, I thought we played very well," said American Legion manager Andy Hess of Sikeston's split of a double-header with Blytheville, Sunday. Sikeston won the first game 9-4, but dropped the night cap in frustrating fashion, 11-9.
