BERTRAND -- Calvin Arthur "Jack" Powell, 95, died at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31, 2005, at the Bertrand Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 29, 1909, in Meridian, Miss., son of the late Joseph and Effie Brown Powell, he was employed in farming until his retirement. He had lived most of his life in Bertrand, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge 407 AF&AM.
On Oct. 4, 1970, he married Verrel Ruth Fansler who survives of Bertrand.
Other survivors include: one son, Calvin A. Powell Jr. of Kansas City; two daughters, Faye Elliott and Vera Shultz of Charleston; one stepson, Rick Hartzel of Huachuca City, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Linda Bacon of Orlando, Fla., and Nancy Hurt of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; three brothers, C.J. Powell of Alabama, Ray Powell of Illinois and Cletus Powell of Missouri; and 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
One son, Arlen Powell; one grandson, Bradley Arlen Powell Jr.; two brothers; and five sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until time for services at 10:30 a.m. at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Dolan Rodgers, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Sikeston.
