CHARLESTON - Eugene "Gene" Slayden, 72, died at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 6, 2005, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Light, Ark., son of the late William Robert and Myrtle Elizabeth Crisel Slayden, he had lived most of his life working in the heavy equipment construction industry. In 1975 he established Slayden's Construction which he operated until his retirement. A member of the Sikeston Eagle's Lodge, he was a former member of the Charleston Jaycees and was affiliated with the Catholic church.
On Dec. 11, 1954, he married Frances Mary Scheffer who survives of the home.
Also surviving are: one son, Ronald G. Slayden of Arlington, Ky.; one daughter, Sheila Jeanne Shankle of Charleston; one brother, Richard Slayden of East Prairie; three sisters, Hallie Kimbrel of East Prairie, Sue Hopper of Charleston and Mary Johnson of Dogwood; six grandchildren, Tiffiny Shankle, Tabatha Shankle, Jennifer Slayden, Jessica Slayden, Shawn Dixon and Stephanie Dixon; and one great-granddaughter, Jaszmine Nicole Slayden.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday. Monsignor Richard Rolwing, senior pastor in residence at St. Francis Xavier Church in Sikeston, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: John Smith, Shawn Dixon, Gary Worthy, Zach Scott, Allen Rodgers, Charles Johnson Jr., David Slayden and Wesley Manning.
