CHARLESTON -- Within a 24-hour period, three possible drug-related deaths in Mississippi County ended with a shooting and stabbing incident in Charleston early today.
Shawn Johnson, 39, of Cairo, Ill., was shot to death at a residence on South First Street in Charleston and pronounced dead at the scene around 2:30 a.m. today by Mississippi County Coroner Terry Parker.
Following an altercation with the Charleston man who lived at the home, Johnson was shot, according to Parker. The Charleston man, whose name has not been released, received stabbing wounds and was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. At press time, it was unclear who possessed the gun and knife, Parker said.
No further information was available about whether the Charleston man was in custody. Phone calls to Charleston Department of Public Safety Police Chief Paul Johnson were not immediately returned.
The other two possible drug-related deaths involved a young East Prairie woman who died around 2:30 a.m. today and a truck driver found dead Thursday afternoon in a Charleston hotel room. Autopsies on all three victims are being conducted today in Farmington. The Missouri Highway Patrol crime scene investigation team has also been called in to investigate.
