Shooting questioned

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

SIKESTON -- A shooting Monday night left officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety questioning the victim as to who really fired the shot.

According to DPS Director Drew Juden, the shooting was reported about 9 p.m. when Williams Henry, 19, of 714 Ruth St., said he was walking in Roberta Rowe Park. Henry said an unknown assailant dressed all in black came up from behind and shot him in the back side of his left hand. The victim said a hooded sweat shirt prevented the suspect's face from being seen.

During the investigation, officers discovered powder burns around the entry wound in the palm of the Henry's left hand and the back side appeared to be an exit wound. During continued questioning, Henry maintained his story that he was shot in the back of the hand by an unidentified subject. Due to heavy rain coming down at the time, officers were unable to locate a crime scene in the park area where Henry stated the incident occurred.

According to a realease issued by Juden, it is believed Henry shot himself in the hand and disposed of the weapon before calling police.
