SIKESTON - Bill Scarbrough, who had been in attendance at the Officers' Candidate School in Fountain Beau, France, received his commission as second lieutenant in the infantry May 14.

SIKESTON - In order to meet the needs and demands of a prosperous and progressive community, the city council and board of public works of Sikeston have proposed $1,200,000 worth of improvements to be made in the municipally-owned water and sewage works. The proposal will have to be approved by the voters. According to the Board of Public Works, community growth is the most important reason behind the proposed improvements.

SIKESTON - A champagne tea was conducted in honor of Lila Harwell Sunday afternoon at the home of Glenda Spangler in Sikeston. The event was hosted by friends and members of the Beta Sigma Phi fraternity in Sikeston. The honoree has been a resident of Sikeston for over 50 years, has been social sponsor of the six Beta Sigma Phi chapters in Sikeston since 1947. She also has been instrumental in many civic and professional organizations, including being the founder of the Civic Club as well as having been named Woman of the Year in 1964.

ORAN - The Oran Knights of Columbus 4311 made two check presentations Thursday - the first for $175.50 to the Kenny Rogers Cerebral Palsy Center in Sikeston and a check for $175.50 to New Dawn State School.

LILBOURN - Summer fun includes the annual Summer Days. Scheduled from June 13-14, this year's Summer Fun Days will offer amusement rides, pageants and a performance by the Dixie Players. Proceeds from the annual event will benefit the Volunteer Fire Department.

SIKESTON - Kevin Vent, the Bulldogs' and American Legion's ace pitcher, and Blake Ledbetter, the top catcher of both teams, will attend the St. Louis Cardinal's free-agent tryout camp at Busch Stadium June 12-13. Both vent and Ledbetter are 1995 graduates of Sikeston High.
