SIKESTON - A groups of young girls, chaperoned by Mrs. Elmer Peage, enjoyed an outing in Cape Girardeau Friday.

SIKESTON - The Frisco Railway will discontinue its daily trains between Sikeston and Memphis and Sikeston and St. Louis. No date was announced for the termination, which will affect passenger service only. Freight service will continue.

SIKESTON - With Jim Nabors continuing to bring the crowds in droves, the 7,000 second night attendance at the 13th annual Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo witnessed an action-packed night of ride 'em cowboy!

SIKESTON - Porch lights were ablaze in many areas of Sikeston for the Night Out, a national sit-in program against crime. DPS Crime Prevention Officer Rick Toon said this morning that he observed people sitting in their yards or porch lights on about one out of every five houses between 8 and 9 p.m. He estimates that about 20 percent of the population participated and considered the event a success.

SIKESTON - At today's kickoff of the 1995 United Way campaign, this year's goal of $73,000 was announced. The money will be divided among 16 local agencies. "The idea behind Sikeston's United Way is a simple one - by giving one gift, dozens of Sikeston organizations can benefit," said Michael Jensen, president of the 1995 campaign.

SIKESTON - Volleyball players from Sikeston and Steele recently took second place in the 1995 High School Summer Volleyball League sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department. Members of the team are: Anita Pounds, Lori Sexton, Stephanie White, Shamecia Pounds, Wendy Launius, Molly Pfefferkorn, Jennifer Idleman, Mariana Turner and Laverne Turner. The coach was Dave Guthrie.

ESSEX - Amy Lyn Gean, a sophomore at Richland High School, was named first alternate at the Miss Essex-Gray Ridge Pageant. She is the daughter of Dalton and Linda Gean.
