Ambulance crash claims the life of two

KENNETT -- Two people were killed in an accident involving an ambulance Sunday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 8:45 a.m. a Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center ambulance operated by Patrick White, 23, of Poplar Bluff was traveling on Highway 164 and Route NN, eight miles south of Kennett, and no emergency equipment was engaged on the ambulance. An accident occurred as White failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the vehicle driven by Dorothy Worrell, 64, of Hornersville.

Worrell and the patient the ambulance was transporting, 66-year-old William Braden of Wappapello, were pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County coroner Jack Atkins.

White sustained minor injuries while James Simpson, 43, of Pocahontas, Ark., medical personnel who was in the rear of the ambulance, received serious injuries. Simpson was air evacuated to Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Tenn. Citations are pending, and an investigation by patrol troopers and the crash team is under way.
