CARUTHERSVILLE - A man wanted for capital murder in Mississippi is in custody after law enforcement officials followed his trail to Hayti.
Officers with the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, Hayti Police Department and Missouri Highway Patrol arrested Albert McDonald, 24, of New Albany, Miss., at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The search for McDonald began after Hayti Police received information that he was in the Hayti area. Authorities said McDonald had used a phone at a local Hayti residence and the call was traced, leading police to the residence.
McDonald was taken into custody without incident at the northbound rest area on Interstate 55. Also a vehicle stolen from Mississippi and evidence related to the crimes in New Albany were recovered by officers.
The man is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail pending extradition to Mississippi.
According to a New Albany news report, McDonald was wanted in connection with the murder of an elderly couple. Chico and Charlotte Foote were found murdered inside their house in New Albany.
In the report, New Albany Police stated they believed McDonald committed the murders. Also he was wanted by officers for shooting three other people along a road less than a mile away. Two of those people were critically injured.
After killing the couple, police said McDonald left in their car.
The murders were only the first and second in New Albany this year.
