Drug charges are filed against couple following traffic stop

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

BENTON -- A Pemiscot County couple were arrested on drug-related charges following a routine traffic stop near Benton Monday.

Prentiss Johnson, 29, and Brianna Christy, 17, of Caruthersville, were charged with distribution of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said that while on patrol, he saw a car with a missing front license plate sitting at a local restaurant. When the vehicle left the business, Walter initiated a traffic stop.

While talking with the driver about the violation, an odor of burning marijuana was detected coming from the car, and drug paraphernalia was seen in plain view inside the car, Walter said.

The couple was ordered from the car. In addition to seizing the visible contraband, about 59 grams of marijuana, scales, ecstasy tablets, cocaine residue and over $7,000 in small bills were also located.

"You never know when an opportunity to take drugs off the street is going to present itself, and you have to always be ready to act," Walter said. "We make traffic stops in the interest of promoting safety for the motoring public, but occasionally these stops yield additional rewards."

Bond for Johnson has been set at $75,000, and Christy's bond is $25,000. At press time, they remained in jail.
