Wednesday, September 7, 2005

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldog softball team made the most of limited offensive production in a 2-0 win over Cape Central on Tuesday.

In a matchup of district opponents, Sikeston (4-4) plated an unearned run in the first, then added an insurance run in the fifth.

Paige Silverthorn, aboard on walks each time, scored both Lady Bulldog runs. In the first, Silverthorn led off with a base on balls, advanced to second on a one-out walk to Molly Brinkmeyer, then crossed the plate on a Central error on Beth Ziegenhorn's bunt attempt.

Brinkmeyer, who led Sikeston with a 2-for-3 day, singled home Silverthorn in the fifth after she was sacrificed to second on Erin Wibbenmeyer's bunt.

Brinkmeyer pitched the complete-game win, allowing four hits with six strikeouts.

Wibbenmeyer and Kaycie Williams shared the other two Sikeston hits.

Sikeston coach Tiffany King praised her team's defensive effort, singling out two potential game-saving catches.

"Overall, our defense looked a lot better," she said. "We had two good plays, both diving catches, in the outfield by Kaitlyn Turnbow and Elizabeth Heeb."

Sikeston hosts Kelly today at 4 p.m.

SOCCER

MARION -- A late goal lifted Marion (Ill.) past Sikeston on Tuesday.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1, Marion netted the game-winner at the 78-

minute mark for a 2-1 victory.

Sikeston (1-3) had handled Marion rather easily in a 5-2 win at the Notre Dame Soccerfest last weekend.

"They just outplayed us tonight," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long.

Marion struck first with a goal by Andrew Sadler, assisted by Chris Brown, at the 30-minute mark and held the 1-0 lead into the half.

Sikeston's Dakota Trevino tallied the game-tying goal on an assist from Blake Taylor, 15 minutes into the second half.

Then, at the 78-minute mark, Marion's Eli Bradley spiked a cross from Brown for the final 2-1 margin.

"It was a great goal," said Long. "(Scott) Droddy had no chance."

Bulldog goalie Scott Droddy stopped 12 Marion shots. Sikeston outshot Marion by a slim 15-14 margin.

Sikeston's junior varsity suffered a 2-0 loss to Marion.

The Bulldogs host Kennett today at 5 p.m. in a junior varsity/varsity matchup.

Jenni DeWitt and Tess Marshall, Sikeston's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players who also team on the No. 1 doubles duo, garnered the only wins for the Lady Bulldogs in the 3-6 varsity loss.

DeWitt kept her unblemished singles streak alive at 4-0 and she and Marshall remained undefeated as a doubles team with their fourth straight.

Marshall staged a strong comeback, fighting back from an 0-4 deficit to win her singles match 8-6.
