Grace period nears end for landlords

Tuesday, February 7, 2006

SIKESTON -- The informal grace period for landlords who fail to register their rental property is about over.

City Manager Doug Friend said during Monday's regular Sikeston City Council meeting that all landlords received a letter and registration packet in October to remind them of the registration requirement. Letters were also sent after the end of the year. The deadline to register each year is Dec. 1.

"I think people get confused," Friend said. "I don't think they realize it's an annual event."

A list of the 60 landlords who have not yet registered as of Monday's meeting was distributed to Council members. "Its time to take some kind of action," Friend said.

He suggested the city begin signing complaints after Feb. 15. The minimum fine for failure to register is $500, according to Friend.

Some on the list may have passed away, sold the property or have some other legitimate excuse for not registering, Friend said. "In some instances, they can just call us," he said.
