SIKESTON - Phyllis Joyner Throgmorton died peacefully at her home in Sikeston on May 1, after a brief bout with cancer.
Daughter of Floyd L. and Elnora Gross, she was born on July 24, 1917, in New Madrid, Mo.

A member of Sikeston Country Club and of the ladies golf association since 1954, she was an avid golfer and a world traveler. Phyllis took great pride in being a homemaker. She was not only an excellent cook (her cheese grits were divine), but an outstanding businesswoman as well. She ran Joyner's Liquor Store on Malone Avenue during World War II while her husband, Glen, was away in Japan. She received a great education in investing from her second husband, Dr. Howard Throgmorton. Phyllis and Howard were a great golf team.
She is survived by her two children, Carol J. Lindlau of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Robert L. Joyner of New York City; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Phillip, and her sister, Nanette.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, May 5 at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
